As we walk inside the church, the others that are scattered around the sanctuary seem startled by our appearance. Roselyn casts daggers my way with her eyes as I head to my bedroom. Some nasty little creature that I didnât know existed inside me, throws back a smirk and pretends more went on than what actually did. Nervousness widens her eyes and she quickly looks away as she calls out to Ronan.
Satisfied with her response, I shut my door behind me and undress as I peel the sodden layers from my damp skin. I put on my warmest worn clothing. Small vapors of smoke creep through a crack in the seal of the door and greet my nose to tell me that someone wonderful has started a fire. I rip the tattered quilt from my bed and bundle inside it as I hurry out to the fire.
Ronan sits on a bench before the fire as Roselyn practically sits on his lap. I try not to notice them or the smug look on her face as I pass by their place before the blaze. Right before the massive hearth, I place my blanket on the ground as a mattress and lie down on it. I hear Maggieâs familiar cadence in her oversized boots as she draws closer to my prone position. She stops behind me and lowers herself slowly to the floor. Her old bones creak their protest of the movement.
âI figured you would forget to brush this mess,â she grumbles to me as she picks up the fall of my tangled hair and places it on her lap. I turn my head in her direction and offer a rueful smile as she holds up the brush in her hand. My gaze edges back to the fire as she begins the strokes with the brush. It tugs at the skin of my scalp with each tangle it comes across. But the movement is comforting and pleasant. Softly she begins to hum some old song she remembers from her earlier years.
The flames dance before me red, gold and orange as they beckon, hypnotize and mesmerize me. My other senses fade as the fire calls me closer. I can no longer resist its pull as I fall into its warmth, and into a world of fire.
I tumble around in circles in the orange space that surrounds me and wonder why the flames don't burn my flesh. A pulse deep in the fire beats in my ear and it calls me to its rhythm. I go deeper into its brilliance and suddenly the fire clears. A giant white building, glorious in its stature stands before me. The drumming seems to come from somewhere between its massive walls, where I want, no, need to be.
I lift my foot to begin my climb up the giant staircase before me, but with the thought I am instantly transported to the door and already past the stairs. Confused by my sudden talent in teleportation, I cast a wary glance to the stairs behind me.
